Martha Colburn’s stop-motion animations are probably what would result if a tractor trailer filled with construction paper had a lightspeed collision with a Harvard political-science student’s subconscious, in a Petri dish. Her work is like that wreck: explosive, grotesque, dramatic, proto-pornographic and highly emotional — and you’d sooner die than look away.
This video is from last year but is still as earnest and powerful as ever. Check our her website for locations where you can catch her videos around the country and in Europe this summer, probably somewhere alongside an art installation or live performance.
In her own words, her work is “a crazy, chaotic, mish-mash of collage and colored glass and animation.” Agreed. And I can’t look away.
To see more of Martha’s work you should visit her YouTube page. Plus you can see who she likes, perhaps to gain some insight into her wild imagination.
