Periodic Tables of Nonscientific Randomness

The Periodic (Picnic) Table: Via Makezine

Scientists are a kooky bunch. They spend their days peeking into microscopes to determine the make-up of things and their nights writing about what they saw, probably in longhand, so a bunch of other scientists can read it and scratch their heads and say, “Well that’s not how it is”. It’s like a geeky cocktail party that you’re simply not invited to, no matter how much you like the hors d’oeuvres platter.

That’s why we must take the knowledge they impart and do things with it that entertain our puny little minds. My mind being very puny, I’ve gathered the best of a new design meme that turns their hoity-toity science into infographics. Being a pragmatist, I can appreciate when something as esoteric and technical as the periodic table can be transformed beyond our 9th grade science class homework and used to visualize the decidedly non-scientific world of our everyday lives.

Here lies 8 periodic tables to describe things that are far from scientific, but goddamn close to pertinent and even sometimes laugh out loud funny.

(Click on the images to be taken to larger versions on their requisite pages.)

Because I appreciate his design concept, the first table comes from a creative visualist by the name of Mike Dolphin. Very happy to see Chuck Close, Graham Greene and Michel Gondry on his chart among the other multifaceted greats.

Taking it to the world of professional cycling races, Cyclocosm takes on the periodic athletic.

From the velo to the vulgar comes this fucking awesome chart from Geekology and Jolly Old England, obviously; only the Brits would have something in their lingo like “twat him one”. If you’re really into it, this table is also for sale. The Periodic Table of Swearing.

What anti-science obfuscation would be complete without something dedicated to meat. I ask you.

And because cupcakes are dirty little clumps of deliciousness, it’s the Periodic Cupcake. For the full table click on the image to be brought to the source page. And I recommend you do because there you can get the recipes for all these cupcake’s atomic weights. Delicious.

Speaking of Innerwebz, you certainly don’t want to alienate your average Lolcat reader. The Periodic Table of Awesoments.

In what might be the mother of all periodic charts, we see how our species will meet its ultimate demise. No doubt this can be relied upon. The Periodic Catastrophic.

And finally, filling the gap where all the other tables fail completely: The Periodic of Periodics. A masterpiece.
