Aristophanes, the comic playwright of ancient Greece, argued that “once upon a time” human beings had four arms, four legs, two sets of eyes, ears, genitalia, etc, and were extremely powerful. When these creatures began to scale the heavens and “set upon” the gods, Zeus split them in two, dividing their power and leaving them to forever roam the planet searching for their other half, their soul mate so to speak.
Now with our modern tendency to oversimplify things, the idea of soul mates has grown in consciousness and we search, mostly on the Internet, for our lost half, the person who makes us feel complete and powerful — our one true love.
It’s a bit of a quaint notion, but who can argue that there may actually be someone from whom we’ve been detached. And if we met them the skies would open up and we would know it instantly.
This is the idea around which the following sensational video revolves. It renders that immaculate moment in luscious three-dimensional time-slice capture as the two lonely souls reunite along with the wonderful psychic hellstorm that surrounds it. This beautiful and remarkable short film called Nuit Blanche, or White Night, shows us what’s that like.
Of course, considering the world’s sheer number of inhabitants (it’s generally thought that the average person will meet roughly 50,000 people in their lifetime), it seems very unlikely that we’ll actually meet our proverbial soul mate, but if by chance it actually happens one look will stop time, logic will be defied, reality will melt away and the universe will be swept inside out. Maybe I’m a romantic but I feel everything we used to know will be rewritten into a typhoon of thundering impossibilities. Right, OkCupid? RIGHT??
Anyway, Nuit Blanche explores the fleeting moment when two strangers come back together after eons apart. And the whole thing is sheer cinematic and technological gold.
