Travel Photo Roulette Round 15: Piousness

Roulette

Credit: Håkan Dahlström

Welcome to the 15th edition of Travel Photo Roulette! Last week’s edition was hosted by Shutterfeet and just happened to be won, amazingly with the stiff competition, by yours truly. So by virtue of the rules of the game, 10 Times One will be hosting this edition.

For those of you who don’t know, Travel Photo Roulette was started last year by Jeremy of Living The Dream RTW and has become a popular harvester of great travel photos in a welcome forum.

The “little wheel” having come around for me to choose the next theme, I’ve decided on “piousness”.

After spending some time in India this past month, I realized how much of a force spirituality is in India, reinforcing the belief that the people of the world are very devout, and that spirituality is both far-reaching and photogenic.

It’s hard to deny the presence of devotion in the world. I want to see the average traveling photographer’s interpretations of that. Your photo can be any take on the theme, be it pilgrims climbing a shrine, a nun doing her daily work, a temple, or the simple application of a bindi.

Here’s a sample image of what I’m talking about:

Don’t forget, piousness doesn’t have to mean religion. It could also mean a devout passion for anything at all.

CONTEST RULES

Extra Criteria to Keep in Mind When Submitting a Photo:

  1. One submission per Blog (so sites that have 2+ authors only get one entry).
  2. No photoshopping allowed unless specifically called for! Cropping and correction for red-eye or camera flaws are ok, however. Don’t worry about it.
  3. Abstract submissions welcomed as long as it fits within the interpretation of the chosen phrase. Remember, the hosting blogger chooses the winner, so if they cannot understand the submission, you might not win!
  4. Keep phrases general so that all bloggers can participate. Specific items like “Eiffel Tower” should be avoided but rather made open-ended like “monuments.” For variety, it is ok to say focused things such as “monuments at night” in which most of us have pictures of.
  5. Abstract thoughts are appreciated, but keep it within the realm that all readers will understand. No “Kafka-esque”, but “Overlooking Creation” is able to be interpreted by all.
  6. No obscene pictures or phrases allowed. Suggestive phrases and photography can be accepted, but please keep it within reason.
  7. After a sufficient period of time, phrases can be reused, however new photos must be submitted.
  8. Keep the ideas and photos fresh!
  9. Pictures from your entire portfolio are fair to submit. You do not have to take the photo within the week of the contest period to submit it.
  10. Most importantly, ALL PHOTOS MUST BE YOUR OWN.

To Submit An Image

To enter in the Photo Roulette competition simply leave a comment below with a link to the image (whether Flickr, Picasa or your own site) and I’ll upload it to this post. Don’t forget to provide a brief description or caption for the photo so the viewers can get a little background as to what’s happening.

Check back here through the week to see all the entries as they come in – feel free to comment on them. The contest runs for 7 days, with the submission date being now until Thursday, April 21st, 2011 . I’ll announce the winner on Friday, April 22nd, and he or she will host round 16.

One last rule, since this is a competition for bloggers, we need you to be a blogger to be declared a winner. Sorry!

The results:

I wasn’t looking forward to Friday. I knew I’d have to choose a winner for this round and I really liked all the entries. It was going to be a tough decision. A solid half-dozen stood out for me, but in the end it was the way the entrants chose to interpret the piousness theme that did it. For me Clair’s photo captured it. There’s a lot that’s excellent about this photo. The composition, the spiderlike fractures in the rocks reminiscent of a bomb blast, the solemn and hopeful faces of the women, the colors, and the overall message that if one travels distances, gives up valued items and is true to the ritual they might be happy in life and love. It speaks volumes.

Thanks a lot Clair, nice work!

The Winner

Honorable Mention

Subir @ Always Outbound

Ladakh monk

The runner up goes to Subir with his monk in drum beating meditation. The piousness is obvious here and the scene was captured superbly.

Hi, I think I submit mine last night but somehow it didn’t go through I think.
    So, here it is again.

    Non religious “piousness” photo.
I met Saul and Matt on the road in New Zealand. Two young men from UK, who are totally devoted to their music. They grew up together, and had their dream of music together all these years. Sorry you had technical problems, Juno. But I’m glad you persisted. I love your interpretation of the theme. These dudes look spiritually devoted to guitar. The look on the closer one’s face says it all.

  5. Subir @ Always Outbound 04/19/2011 at 12:53 pm #

Great photos – I couldn’t resist adding mine.

Super psyched on all the entries into this edition of Travel Photo Roulette. Some really great ones, and very interesting interpretations on the theme of piousness. I hope you keep em coming!

we walked into this amazing church and we were admiring the artwork and as we were viewing we looked up at the ceiling, and it was amazing! How did they do something this beautiful in the middle ages?

Dang Cam, powerful shot. I’m wondering if you used a tripod to capture this image. I see the stars around the light points and usually the best way to get that effect is with a tripod. Unless you know another secret.

Cool. Interested in seeing what the entire statue looks like. Thanks for the submission, Jeremy.

    • Jeremy 04/16/2011 at 7:33 pm #

Guess you’ll have to go to Paris and find it in Notre Dame! I have a few photos of the full size statues from around the cathedral, but I am not sure if the ones I have are of the ones I took close up of.

    • Nico 04/16/2011 at 6:50 pm #

Great! This one and Jeremy’s (the next one) go together very well. Sometimes I wonder about the synchronicity that brings things like that about. Nice entry.

The Sinulog, celebrated in the honor of the “Sto. Niño” or Baby Jesus, is one of Philippines’ grandest and most colorful festival. This photo of the Parade Queen dancing while holding a statue of the Baby Jesus, was taken during the Grand Parade. Local and foreign travelers flock to Cebu every third Sundays of January to witness the grandiose celebration.

Fantastic shot. It’s not easy to catch such a spontaneous moment, but you did. Well done.

  20. Sarah Got A Passport 04/14/2011 at 9:33 pm #

@Manyu love the monkeys in prayer! This photo was taken at a mosque in Cairo. The woman looks so serene as she prays.

Great composition Sarah. Need to get to Cairo one of these days.

  21. Maggie 04/14/2011 at 8:52 pm #

On my final day at Sivananda ashram in India, we skipped morning meditation in the temple and took a silent walk up a mountain instead. It was a powerful lesson in how everyone can connect with their own spirituality anywhere, not just within traditional places of worship.

    Here’s my submission: http://www.flickr.com/photos/38494596@N00/5620489545/in/photostream

And here’s the post I wrote about the experience: http://www.girlventures.net/archives/4095

    • Nico 04/14/2011 at 9:09 pm #

Wowsers, Maggie! Amazing shot. You’ve also shown that one small venture outside of a routine can yield some great things. And yes, a connection to the spiritual can happen wherever you are, traditional or not. Thanks for the submission.

  22. Manyu 04/14/2011 at 6:35 pm #

Like you said, it’s hard to deny the presence of devotion in the world. Sometimes that can be even when you are literally in the presence of wild monkeys!
